AutoCar got behind the wheel of the new 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid and proved that a hybrid car can be as fun as any other sports car on the market.
The hybrid drive combines a 480 HP 4.0 Liter flat six engine with two electric motors developing 60 kW each as well as an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the cockpit next to the driver. This unit is used to deliver energy to the electric motors and is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators when not providing four wheel drive traction.
And just as a little reminder, back in April the GT3 R Hybrid made a very successful impression at the Nürburgring Nordschleife where it was driven by AT&T Williams Formula 1 pilot, Nico Hülkenberg.

Porsches that know how to get down and dirty in the name of speed are extremely sexy to us. Thank God then for strapping men like Teamspeed forum member, Fred, who entered his Porsche 997 GT3 RS at the recently-concluded Goldrush Rally at the Salt Flats in Utah.
The combination of the Porsche 997 GT3 RS and the location of the rally - you couldn’t pick a better place to whet your need for speed than at the Salt Flats - makes this three-minute video a must-watch for anybody who’s ever had a remote interest in watching the world’s fastest cars put their reputations on the line, all in the name of pushing their cars to the absolute limit.
Of course, we are unaware if Fred has tweaked his engine to his speedy liking - although we would guess that he absolutely did - but the standard Porsche 911 GT3 RS has a 3.8L engine producing 450hp with an output of 118hp per liter. The maximum torque is 317 lb.-ft. at 6,250 rpm. It makes the 0-60mph sprint in 4.0 seconds with a top track speed of 194 mph.
