Inside Line got behind the wheel of the 2011 Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI V10 and took it for a little test run out on the track. So, is the R8 Spyder worthy of its Audi name? Check out the video to find out!
The 5.2 Liter FSI V10 in the R8 Spider delivers a maximum output of 525 HP at 8,000 RPM and has a rather high compression ratio of 12.5:1 in order to get the most out of the high revving naturally aspirated power plant. With a weight of only 3,792 pounds, the R8 Spider is able to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in under 4.1 seconds; go from 0 to 125 MPH in a little over 12.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 194.49 MPH, all while consuming 15.79 MPG in the manual transmission version, or 16.92 MPG in the R-tronic variant.

What is a high-end sports car? Are they Italian performance machines like the Ferrari 458 and the Lamborghini Gallardo, or are they more sensible vehicles like the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG? We think they’re the latter.
For this top ten, we are going to set the price cap at $120,000, if you can call that a cap. That should eliminate most of the extreme vehicles, but keep the basic Porsches and so on within the limits.
What kinds of things are we looking for with high-end sports cars? Obviously, they need to be fast with agile handling and excellent driving dynamics. The car needs to look stunning with a functional yet stylish interior. It would also be great if it could stand the test of time, so reliability is also a factor.
Let’s review the previous winners of our sports car test. The Volkswagen GTI took the top spot in the entry-level test due to its excellent performance, build quality, and versatility. There were numerous winners of the mid-level test, as we had multiple categories. We chose the Audi S4, the BMW M3, and the Ford Mustang GT500 as the top cars in their classes.

Every once in awhile, a random Facebook message or Twitter allows us to see a new tuning package before the tuning firm officially releases details on it. This time, a “tweet” from the tuning firm itself has announced a couple of new packages for Audi. SR Auto Group of British Columbia has announced the debut of the “Military” themed Audi R8 and Q7. Both models are painted in a “Militar Grey” exterior paint derived from the camouflage element used by war units. Also, both models feature PPI products throughout as well as some notable performance upgrades.
The R8 model gets the usual front bumper, front lip, side skirts, rear diffuser, and front grill, all in carbon fiber. The tuner has also added carbon front intake grill inserts and a carbon side blade overlay. The Q7 gets a carbon fiber wide body aero package and an HID xenon dual fog lamp system. No major modifications have been made to the interior.
The R8 sits on 20″ wheels painted in Satin Black Finish and the Q7 sits on 22″ wheels painted in matte black. Both models come with a new exhaust system and the R8 also receives a ECM Upgrade. There are no details yet of how the performances have been changed.

Recently the new Audi R8 E-tron competed in the Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010. The electric R8 was driven along the 104 route through the Austrian state of Vorarlberg by Michael Dick, member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Technical Development, and factory driver Lukas Luhr. The result? A double victory in the inaugural “Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010″ and 13th in the “Silvretta Classic Montafon”. The car was tested in ten different mountain, valley, and timed special stages. IN order to see what the vehicle was capable of doing, you have to watch the video.
The Audi R8 E-tron is powered by four motors – two each on the front and rear axles, that delivers a total of 313 HP and 4,500 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of 124.27 mph.

Maybe it’s just us, but our fascination for sports athletes and the cars that they drive is a real sickness, bordering even on downright fanaticism. While we profess to be fans of these athletes and whatever sport they excel in, it’s hard not to get caught up in the fancy rides that they buy from the piles of money they receive when playing their respective sports.
This particular scoop photo was taken by a forum member from CorrieraDellaSera.it – noggin knock to you, Mr. SabraSport – featuring Inter FC striker Mario Balottelli and his jaw-dropping matte black Audi R8 V10.
Okay, given that this 20-year old soccer stud plays for Serie A in Italy, we’re going to excuse you for not being familiar with the dude. But even if you don’t know him, the car he drives certainly needs no introduction. And add that to the fact that it’s dressed in a matte black finish and has unique black/yellow rims with matching brake calipers and you have a car that’s going to make heads turn no matter who’s sitting behind the wheel.

The German tuner, MTM, has created the most powerful street legal Audi R8 ever. Recently the sportscar showed what it could do on a race track.
The MTM R8 GT3-2 is powered by a 4.2 FSI engine delivering a total of 560 HP (up from a standard 420 HP) at 7.750 RPM and a torque of 580 Nm at 5.500 RPM all to the rear wheels. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in 3.9 seconds, while top speed goes up to 196 mph.
The R8 GT3-2 gets 20″ wheels, a carbon fiber front spoiler, side skirt, and rear wing which add to the car’s sporty look. The carbon fiber front spoiler elongates the front of the car giving it a meaner look which is ironic considering there is no power to the front of the car.

Rahul Patel bares the distinction as one of the few men in the US to strike gold in the lottery. This time last year – June 29,2009, to be exact – Patel parlayed a $1 Powerball lottery ticket into $25 million and with his new-found wealth, proceeded to purchase himself a nice, spanking new Audi R8 about a week ago.
According to a number of reports, Patel was in the northbound side of Merritt Parkway somewhere between exits 46 and 47 when the R8’s engine inexplicably began smoking, causing the lottery winner to pull over on the shoulder to check up on his new toy. As soon as he stopped to check, flames suddenly burst out of the Audi R8’s engine as Patel haplessly watched his new Audi supercar be barbecued by the ensuing fire. The result, as you can imagine, was a complete loss with Patel left wondering if his luck had finally ran out.
We feel bad for him for losing such a beautiful car after only purchasing it a week earlier, but on the other hand, it’s hard to empathize with the dude because he can probably afford a few more of these R8’s with the money he scooped up a year ago. That is, unless, he hasn’t burned through the winnings too.

We have all seen our fair share of matte black and pink wraps lately. Of course, those colors seem to be pretty ordinary when pinned up against the latest wrap craze. What’s hotter than a matte black wrap? Well, to some owners, it would be the rich color of gold. The last sports car featuring this new trend was the Audi R8 spotted in Moscow, Russia. Maybe the gold wrapping is no longer as unique as it once was considering we have seen plenty of cars with a golden touch. Until now we have seen a golden Ferrari Enzo, a golden Bugatti Veyron and a golden Ferrari 599 GTB by Hamann. We just hope that people will not believe the wrap to be real gold so the Audi R8 doesn’t see the same fate as did a golden Porsche that was stolen last year in Moscow.
The Audi R8 features a mid-mounted V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent four-wheel drive, and Audi Space Frame aluminum body. The engine delivers a total of 420 HP and sprints the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and can hit a top speed of 187 mph.

We guess that there’s no doubt which team this Audi R8 owner has been rooting for during the FIFA World Cup. And even if the Oracle of Oberhausen (an octopus by the way) predicted that Spain will win the Cup and Spain has already beaten Germany in the semifinals, this guy seems to be keeping his fanaticism rooted in Germany. The car even displays 2010 as a winning year for Germany along with their previous wins in 1954, 1974, and 1990. This guy has to live with his incorrect assumptions until his next trip to the shop!
However, leaving that aside, you have to admit the car looks quite impressive! The black, red, and yellow combination look quite good and the black rims complete the package in a sleek, finished way! Passion is a strange thing; it can lead to some pretty unique and cool designs.
Thanks to reader “common sense” for correcting our FIFA finalists!

Remember a few months ago when we announced Audi would be holding a contest called the “Stark Expo & Audi Present: The Tony Stark Innovation Challenge?” Well, the winner of that contest has been chosen and it is an MIT Graduate Student by the name of Natan Linder.
The “Tony Stark Innovation Challenge” was thought up to persuade individuals to come up with ideas to create better living through the use of technology. Contestants had to submit a two minute video outlining their idea and then get as many people as they could to rate, comment, and discuss their video through the use of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and any other social media.
Natan Linder was chosen for his invention, the LuminAR. The LuminAR is a digital bulb with built-in Internet technology that can project web content onto any surface. The web content is displayed by the use of an extending robotic lamp arm.
“There is a transformation that happens from what you see in movies and how you perceive robotics. They eventually become things that we use everyday,” said Linder. “This is the idea that really drew me to the contest because—aside from being a fan of Iron Man—it represents a vision that I feel really connected to.”
Linder will receive $15,000 to develop his invention in addition to many other awesome prizes including a four-day trip for two to California including air transportation, hotel, and meals and a day at the Audi Sports Car Experience to drive Tony Stark’s favorite car, the Audi R8 on a racetrack.

Audi has entered the new R8 E-tron in the Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010. The electric R8 will be driven along the 104 route through the Austrian state of Vorarlberg by Michael Dick, member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Technical Development, and factory driver Lukas Luhr.
“We already received very good feedback on the Audi R8 e-tron in Le Mans,” says Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Technical Development. “In Montafon, the e-tron will put its potential to the test in ten different mountain, valley and timed special stages. This is a good opportunity to showcase Audi’s integrated approach and to experience the fascination of electromobility in a sports car on the road.”
The Audi R8 E-tron is powered by four motors – two each on the front and rear axles, that delivers a total of 313 HP and 4,500 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of 124.27 mph.

It’s a daunting question to ask, but one that should be laid out nonetheless. What do you do when you have an empty airstrip, a ton of rolling video cameras, ALMS driver Nathan Swartzbaugh at your disposal, and an Audi R8 5.2 FSI waiting to be unleashed?
Okay, the answer isn’t that difficult given that it’s pretty obvious what you would do. Roll the cameras, get Swartzbaugh behind the wheel of the R8, and say, “go!”
Granted, the whole process of piecing together a 30-second spot of a supercar blasting along an airstrip takes more than a few hours; actually, it’s closer to an entire day, which is how long it took the folks over at WebRidesTV to shoot this footage. It’s not as easy as it looks either. The preparation, the shooting, and the production work is enough hard work to make the heads of those who know nothing about production spin faster than a jacked-up carousel.
But that’s why we have these guys to thank. They do all the hard work and all we have to do is wait for the final product and watch it as soon as it’s done. Not all that difficult, is it?

If you had a choice among any of these three supercars, which one would you pick? Difficult question, isn’t it?
While the dreamers in all of us would want all three at the same time, the realists in us probably can’t afford any one of them. So while we’re left with nothing more than a dream of someday owning any one of these German supercar heavyweights, guys like those from Motor Trend can afford to get all three at the same time and take them out on a nice little run through the desert just outside of Las Vegas.
Yeah, we know what you’re thinking; some people just have all the luck.
Fortunately, the fellas from Motor Trend were kind of enough to video their desert romp on-board the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI, and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, sharing their thrillride of a lifetime with us, the jealous populace who’d want nothing more than to be in their shoes while they take all three German supercars out for a spin.

The truth of the matter is, there’s absolutely no way a Honda Civic Type R Mugen hatch can keep up with an Audi R8 V10. Trying to do so is an exercise in both futility and stupidity, but given certain circumstances, like navigating through a twisting country road, can the Civic Type R keep up with the R8 V10?
Ever the curious bees that they are, Autocar went out and tried it for themselves. Turns out, the R8 is still faster than the Civic Type R - no surprise there - especially at straight roads where the former just disappears out of sight. But this exercise wasn’t so much about finding out which is faster because we already had an answer to that. This was done to determine whether the Civic Type R gave the consumer more bang for their buck than an R8. To that end, Steve Sutcliffe seems to think that it does, referring to the R8 as a car that’s "too fast for its own good in roads like this".
We’ve probably shared a little too much now so we’ll just leave the rest so you can enjoy the video yourselves.

Despite being overshadowed by its largely more successful competitor - Top Gear - Fifth Gear still knows a thing or two about grabbing some attention. Having an Audi R8 Spyder race against a Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet in an attempt to see which German wunder car ends up with bragging rights is one way to do it.
In this video, the folks from Fifth Gear are determined to find out how the upstart Audi R8 Spyder measures against the long-reigning king of the 500 horsepower, 100,000-pound car segment.
Comparing the two cars, you wouldn’t be able to find two different super sports cars that are as evenly-matched as these two four-wheeled studs. The R8 Spyder V10 comes in with 525 horsepower whereas the 911 Turbo comes with a "conservative" 500 ponies. However, the 911 does have a couple of advantages to its name, mainly it’s capacity to produce 480 lb/ft of torque at 1,950 rpm compared to the R8’s inferior numbers of just 390 lb/ft of torque at 6,500 rpm.
Will this striking advantage prove to be too much for the R8 Spyder V10 to overcome? Check out the video and find out.
