Giuliano Mazzuoli has unveiled a special edition Contagiri Watch inspired by the legendary Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione model. It comes in white gold and carbon fiber and will be limited to 500 units. But, before you buy, you should know that they are exclusively reserved for the fortunate owners of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.

This watch is like no other in which the number setup is quite unorthodox. It is setup up to look like a gauge in a car where the zero is at the southernmost point of the watch with the one-hand moving in an arc of 270°. When the hand gets to the 12, it repositions itself back to the zero position where you will find the historic green four-leaf clover symbol.

The Alfa Romeo Contagiri 8C Competizione watch has a 44mm stainless steel and black diamond-like-carbon (DLC), automatic mechanical movement, and a black rubber strap with matching metal buckle. It will be limited to only 500 units and each piece will come in a watch box covered in smooth calfskin leather and reptile stamped by master Florentine artisan leather workers.

During a long history of 100 years, Alfa Romeo has created more than 70 models, and what better to draw a little attention to your brand than creating a poll among British Alfa Romeo fans to determine which one of those 70 models is the best. And the winner is…the Alfa Romeo GTAm by a hair of less than 1% over the 8C Competizione.

The Alfa Giulia GTAm was a two door coupe produced y Alfa Romeo in 1970-1971. It was powered by a 2.0 L straight-4 engine producing up to 240hp. It was derived from the standard 1750 GT Veloce production model with a SPICA mechanical fuel injection system. A highlight of the GTAm’s career was winning the 1970 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Dutchman Toine Hezemans. It beat out the competition in this poll with a 20.4% vote. The 8C Competizione followed the GTAm with a 19.8%.

“The Giulia GTAm was a great Alfa and a deserved winner. It’s really interesting to see how people voted in the poll. We all have our favorites which is testament to the fantastic cars Alfa Romeo has produced over the past century.” For those of you interested, the latest GTAm is on sale in dealerships across the UK.

Press release after the jump.

A German news organization is reporting that automotive giant, Volkswagen, has a strong interest in Alfa Romeo. That would mean that Fiat would have to sell Alfa to the Germans, something that they don’t seem to want to do.

Volkswagen has already said that they plan to become the world’s largest car company before 2018 and, in order to accomplish that goal, the company has set aside a $22.3 billion rainy day fund, in case they need to acquire a new company.

Automobilwoche is reporting that Volkswagen has a strong interest in the Italian brand. One VW official was quoted as saying, “If such a treasure could be had, we must not hesitate … too long.”

VW has wanted Alfa for quite some time, because their rival brand Seat, has not been able to sell well outside of its home market. VW believes that they could solve this problem with a historic brand such as Alfa Romeo, but they will need to find a way to get Fiat to sell.

“As already said by (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne, there is no plan to sell the Alfa Romeo brand,” a Fiat spokesman told Reuters on Monday.

We hope that Volkswagen doesn’t get Alfa, because part of the reason why we love them so much is down to their Italian flair and design. Their passionate and soulful engineering is what has made automotive journalists love them so much.

Alfa Romeo has already announced plans to unveil a replacement for the 159 sedan, but it will take a few more years until we see the final product. Until then, the Italian studio MPcardesign has unveiled a new concept study that is believed to be a preview version for the future model.

The concept is called Alfa Romeo Vittorio Jano and was named after the famous racing car designer Vittorio Jano (1891-1965). Its design takes a different direction than the latest Alfa Romeo models which tend to take their cues from the 8C Competizione. Instead, this design is modeled more after the Alfa Romeo 156 and 159 sedans. This is evident in the front-end modeled around the V-shaped badge and the convex surfaces.

The Vittorio Jano was created taking into consideration the actual feasibility, and was designed for a large series production. It will be followed by other virtual models from the same designer which will range from a compact sporty coupe to a sport wagon and a supercar concept.

It’s a time for anniversaries and apparently Chopard and Alfa Romeo are making good use of this celebratory time by putting out a product as part of a festive partnership. The GT XL Chrono Alfa Romeo and the Gran Turismo XL Alfa Romeo will be the products of choice to celebrate Chopard’s 150th anniversary and Alfa Romeo’s 100th anniversary.

Both watches will come in a stainless steel case with a total diameter of 44.00 mm and a thickness of 14.36 mm. Each will feature a black dial with red hands and indexes as well as the logo of the two brands. The timepieces will operate on a 46-hour power reserve and are water resistant for up to 100 meters. The timepieces will also feature COSC-certified in-house automatic movements, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and Chopard’s signature vintage Dunlop-inspired rubber straps.

The GT XL Chrono Alfa Romeo will be available in two different versions; one which will be available in stainless steel and the other in black DLC-coated steel. The Gran Turismo XL Alfa Romeo will see only one version to round off the timepiece line set for these two anniversaries. Each of the three timepieces will be in limited and numbered editions of 500.

As a rather strange and unlikely addition to the celebratory range, Chopard and Alfa Romeo will also be bringing out a table clock in PVD-coated steel that comes with a black leather, red-stitched case, and an additional travel alarm clock that comes with a steel case.

Happy Anniversary Guys! These two anniversaries are definitely worth setting out an entire range of timepieces for and we hope you see many more anniversaries to come!

Between 1959 and 1965 Alfa Romeo produced the special edition Giulietta SS which was a 2-door sports coupe model powered by a 91 HP inline-four engine. During its life time the company only produced 2,766 units, but, now that Alfa Romeo has brought back the Giulietta name, it is expected that an SS version (Sprint Speciale) will follow adding to the number of units created for the special edition.

The anticipated SS would be fit to feature a a smooth, 2-door Gran Turismo body designed by Bertone and would be, in fact, a small 8C Competizione.

The Giulietta is offered with a choice of two gas burning engines. The first is the 1.4TB making 120 HP and the 1.4TB MultiAir that cranks out a total of 170 HP. There will also be two alternatively fueled diesel engines, the 1.6 JTDM pumping out 105 HP and the 2.0 JTDM that makes 170 HP. However it is expected that the SS version would develop at least 250 HP and feature a sportier appearance.

TopSpeed has some new renderings of what the next Alfa Romeo Spider will look like and it looks simply amazing. We all know that Alfa Romeos have always looked sensational and have always delivered that brilliant driving experience that can only be felt if you’ve owned one. They aren’t the fastest and they aren’t the most practical, but their unique design and lovable charm is what makes an Alfa, an Alfa.

The car is based on the Pininfarina 2uettotanta concept shown in Geneva and, based on how well it was received by the public, these new renderings might be an accurate representation of what the model will look like when it’s put into production.

Yet, as is the way with these things, health and safety folks are going to require a few changes before the car goes on sale. First off, the lights will need to be bigger and positioned higher. The LED lights that are currently on the car probably won’t be the only light source, so a blend of normal headlights and LEDs seem more logical. The air intakes need to be enlarged to ensure proper cooling for the V6 that will be under the hood.

Hit the jump to keep reading.

Alfa Romeo’s participation at the Goodwood Festival of Speed needs no introduction or explanation. All you need to do is look at the event’s annual ‘Central Feature’, a statue that’s prominently displayed every year in front of the Goodwood house for fans to ogle at.

And because Alfa Romeo is celebrating their centenary – similar to how Audi was given dibs on the statue last year for their own centennial anniversary – Goodwood was nice enough to give them front and center (grass) billing.

Alfa’s statue will be on display for the entire weekend, and if you look at it closely, you’ll notice that it features the “new” Alfa Romeo 8C and one of its most iconic and rarest cars in existence, the P2. The latter car, just so you know, is only one of two cars in existence. This exact piece won the first world championship for grand prix cars in 1925. And yeah, by the way, that car is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of £15-20 million. Yikes.

In addition to the statue, Alfa will also be celebrating their 100th anniversary by having more than 50 of its historic vehicles, most of which can be found at the company’s Museo Storic historical museum, in attendance.

With all these historic vehicles in one place, you can’t say that Alfa Romeo isn’t pulling out all the stops to make their centennial celebration as unforgettable as it can possibly be.

There must be something in the water in Italy, or at least around Alfa Romeo. The company has said that they could meet and even surpass their sales target fivefold in the next four years.

“In the past you have heard several times Alfa promising such growth figures, but this time we have the right conditions, the right products and the right synergies to get there,” Alfa CEO Harald J. Wester told the Automotive News Europe Congress here last week.

The target is 500,000 in annual sales for its soul and passion brand in 2014. That is up from 100,000 in 2009.

Wester, who is also the CEO of Maserati, says that Alfa’s new products will help the brand reach that lofty goal. The company will be launching six new vehicles in the next four years, including a five-door version of the MiTo. Webster also pointed out that the new partnership between Fiat and Chrysler will help the Italian company like never before. Alfa’s new Giuletta hatchback is based on a new platform that will be in about one million Fiat, Chrysler, and Alfa vehicles every year.

"New Alfa Romeos will be better equipped and offer more rear legroom and comfort features," said Wester.

The Fiat owned brand will be celebrating 100 years with a special event in Milan.

After a very successful history of selling customized Fiat models (22,000 since 2008), Abarth has decided it was time to take its chances with the Alfa Romeo models: "The brand is doing so well that we plan to start producing more performance kits for Fiats, and even some Alfa Romeo models. We won’t be working with the Mito since Alfa already has the Cloverleaf, but there are lots of other possibilities," Antonino Labate, the firm’s sales and marketing boss told Autocar.

This, though, will not happen in the near future. Until then Abarth plans to introduce Esseesse versions for the new Punto Evo Abarth and 500C models. The Esseesse package will include engine upgrades, stiffer suspension, and uprated brakes.

But, wait, there’s more. Abarth will also be introducing the company’s first stand-alone sports car model within the next two years. Also in the next two years, Abarth will be bringing a dual-clutch gearbox for the Punto and Multiair engines for the 500.

Stay tuned for more details!

In line with their 100th year anniversary, Alfa Romeo is being given a lavish four-day party this weekend - from June 24 to 27 - courtesy of the city of Milan. Very impressive. We kind of wish that someone will do that for us when we hit three digits, too.

The event for the celebrant will be hosted by a number of groups that will pay tribute to the iconic Italian brand, who for 100 years - and counting, has been one of the most sought-after and widely respected car brands in the world. Among the groups that will be throwing this party for Alfa Romeo include the Milan City Council, the Fiera Milano Expo, the Monza Race Track, and, of course, the Alfa Romeo Museum.

Likewise, an anniversary of this magnitude deserves something that should be talked about for years to come and in this particular case, that ’something’ is a bronze sculpture of one of Alfa Romeo’s most iconic vehicles, the 1900 Disco Volante. The sculpture, which was donated by the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo or ’RIAR’ and designed by artist Agostino Bonalumi with some much-needed assistance from the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, was built to commemorate the Italian brand’s rich history of being one of the automotive world’s most respected brands. After all, you don’t get to last 100 years without being respected, right?

For its part, Alfa has not only lasted longer than most car brands have ever existed, but the combination of longevity and the continued pursuit of producing top-quality cars will only make this 100th year anniversary all the more gratifying with the thought of another one hundred years - possibly, even longer - becoming all the more attainable.

Happy 100th, Alfa Romeo!

If Alfa Romeo denied rumors about a future SUV then why has Chrysler decided to build two of them under the Alfa Romeo name? Both models will be built in the US with the first model being based on the Giulietta and launching in 2012. The second one is based on the Jeep Cherokee with a debut set for 2014.

The two SUVs are internally known as CSUV (Project 921, CXover possible model name) and D-SUV led (Project 931, model name DXover possible). Both models will be built on the so-called C/D-matrix platform that will also be used for a few other Alfa Romeo models in the future. With approximately 4.6 meters, the Giulietta version will be about 30 centimeters shorter than the D-SUV.

The smaller version will only be offered with four-cylinder engines, with base version using a 115 HP 1.6-liter engine version and the top model using a 1.8-liter engine with 140 HP. A 200 HP Quadrifoglio Verde will also be offered. The Diesel version will include a 1.6-liter engine with 120 HP and a larger 2.0-liter engine with 140 or 170 HP.

At its launch, the DXover version will be offered with a 2.8-liter V6 with 197 HP and a new 3.0-liter V6 with 225 HP at first. A 273 HP 3.3 liters V6 engine will be available at a later date.

An independent Dutch/Italian design company by the name of 1754 Fuori dell’ ordinario have created a design study to celebrate Alfa Romeo’s 100 years of automaking history. Called the Alfa Romeo 6C 3200 Cento, named after the number of cylinders found in the vehicle, the 6C 3200 Cento was inspired by the beautiful spiders and historic racers from Alfa Romeo.

The 6C 3200 Cento has the aesthetic styling of a spider with classic Alfa Romeo touches. It also resembles the 2uettottanta concept from Pininfarina although the V-shaped grille is more pronounced and extends to a V-shaped bonnet as seen on the Alfa Romeo 159. The line of the 6C extends smoothly down the car and finishes with a subtle spoiler. The deep sunken headlights also add to the Alfa Romeo style.

The engine for the Alfa Romeo 6C 3200 Cento was chosen by the designers as the 3.2L V6 found in the Alfa Romeo 156 GTA. This engine provides a galloping 250hp at 6200rpm. The fun doesn’t end there as the power transforms into beautiful music as it escapes the exhaust.

So is this design a go or a no? Let us know what you think.

There have been a couple of iffy moments when it came to the future Alfa Romeo SUV: first people said an SUV will be launched, then that idea was dropped and now it’s back again. A few months ago, Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne confirmed that Alfa Romeo would be coming out with five new models. One of those newbies is to be the new Alfa Romeo SUV due to arrive in 2014.

The only 4x4 model Alfa Romeo has ever produced was the Matta unveiled in the 50s and was based on a Jeep Willys platform. The next Alfa SUV will be built on the platform of the future 2013 Jeep that will replace the current Patriot and Compass. This new SUV will rival that of the BMW X3.

The SUV will be approximately 4.5 m long and 1.8 m wide and will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines.
